Questions about junior programmes
Parents most often ask about the right starting age, group sizes and what happens when a child progresses faster or slower than expected. Junior programmes at GM Tenis Academy accept players from age 8, with the Foundations group designed specifically for younger players where coordination and enjoyment come before competitive elements. Groups are capped at 6 players per coach so that every junior receives individual attention during each session. Progress is reviewed at the end of every block, and level changes are assessed at that point to maintain group consistency — though in clear cases of misplacement, a conversation happens sooner.
Questions about adult group lessons
Adults new to the sport often wonder whether they will be placed with players far more experienced than themselves. Groups are sorted by ability — beginner, intermediate and advanced — and new players are asked to complete a short questionnaire and, if helpful, a free court assessment before their first block. Racquets are available to borrow at no charge for the first two sessions, so there is no equipment barrier to getting started. The social round-robin at the end of each block is a popular part of the programme and a good way to meet other players in the community.
Questions about digital stroke analysis
Players at every level ask whether stroke analysis is only for advanced players. It is not — beginners and intermediate players often benefit most because early correction of ingrained habits prevents years of relearning later. The recording session captures all major strokes on multi-angle video, and the annotated video report and written summary are delivered within 5 business days. The report is written in plain language and can be used with any qualified coach, not only with GM Tenis Academy coaches. A 30-minute follow-up consultation with the analysing coach is included in the full-game analysis options.
Questions about the coach masterclass
Coaches ask most often about certification requirements and whether the professional development hours are recognised. No current certification is required to attend — the masterclass is open to practising coaches, aspiring coaches and physical education teachers who work with tennis players. The 16 hours of structured professional development are designed to align with national coaching education framework requirements, though participants should confirm applicability with their own certifying body. Each masterclass is capped at 18 participants, and private masterclass weekends can be arranged for clubs or associations of 8 or more coaches.
Questions about travelling from outside Red Deer
Players and coaches travel to GM Tenis Academy from Lacombe, Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Ponoka, Innisfail and other central Alberta communities. Most are within 40 kilometres of the facility. Free on-site parking is available directly at the facility, and the building is at ground level with step-free access. Players with specific accessibility requirements are encouraged to contact us in advance so everything can be arranged before arrival.
Most questions about tennis coaching come down to the same concerns: the right level, the right group size and honest progress feedback. Every GM Tenis Academy programme is designed with those concerns in mind.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a competitive player to train at GM Tenis Academy?
Not at all. Programmes are available for complete beginners through to competitive juniors and adults. The recreational adult groups and beginner holiday camps are specifically designed for players who want to enjoy the sport without competitive pressure.
Are programmes available year-round?
Yes. Indoor courts allow programmes to run throughout the year regardless of Alberta's weather. Holiday camps follow the school calendar for spring break, summer and winter break.
Can I switch programmes mid-block?
Level changes are assessed at the end of each block to maintain group consistency. In exceptional cases where a player is clearly misplaced, a direct conversation happens sooner.
Is equipment available to borrow?
Racquets are available to borrow for new players during their first two sessions at no charge. We can also advise on appropriate equipment for your level and budget.
