Service description
Tennis performance depends as much on movement and physical conditioning as on stroke technique. Our conditioning programme is designed specifically for the demands of the sport: lateral speed, first-step quickness, core stability and injury prevention. Sessions are available as a standalone service or as a complement to any coaching programme.
- 01
Who This Programme Is For
This conditioning service is built for any tennis player who wants to move better, last longer and reduce the risk of injury on court. Whether you are a junior learning to coordinate your body through movement patterns or an adult player whose game has outpaced your fitness, the programme meets you where you are.
You do not need to be enrolled in a GM Tenis Academy coaching programme to take part. Conditioning is open as a standalone service to any player in the Red Deer area, and it can also be added on to an existing coaching programme if you want both physical and technical development running side by side.

What Each Session Covers
Every session targets the physical qualities that tennis actually demands: lateral speed, first-step quickness, core stability and rotational power. You will work through movement and footwork pattern drills, lateral speed exercises and core and mobility work designed to protect the joints and muscles most exposed during match play.
Sessions run for sixty minutes and are guided by an individualised plan built from your initial fitness assessment. That plan evolves as you progress, so the work you do in week one looks different from the work you do in week eight — because you are different by then.
- 03
How the Eight-Week Block Works
A single session gives you a taste of the training; an eight-week block gives you measurable change. GM Tenis Academy recommends two sessions per week across the block, a rhythm that allows adaptation without overloading recovery. Progress is tracked throughout, so you can see exactly where your movement and conditioning have improved.
At the end of the block, your results inform what comes next — whether that is another conditioning cycle, a shift in focus toward a specific physical quality or a conversation about how your on-court game has responded to the work. Nothing is set and forgotten; the programme stays responsive to you.
- 04
Your First Step: The Fitness Assessment
Before your first conditioning session, you complete a thirty-minute assessment conducted both on and off court. It covers movement patterns, basic strength indicators and any injury history that needs to be factored into your plan. The goal is not to grade you but to understand you.
That understanding is what separates a generic fitness class from a session designed for a tennis player standing on a Red Deer court. The assessment results are used to write your personalised session plan, so from day one the work is specific to how your body moves and what your game needs most.

Built on the Ground Here in Red Deer
GM Tenis Academy grew from coaches who played on the same public courts many of our players grew up on. That shared ground matters. We understand the school schedules, the seasonal rhythms and the competing demands on time that shape life in central Alberta, and we build our conditioning blocks around them.
When you train here, you are not fitting into a programme designed for a big-city academy. You are working with coaches who know this community and have chosen to build something lasting within it — a conditioning service rooted in the same baseline every Red Deer player has stood behind.

What to Bring and How to Prepare
Wear court shoes with lateral support — the movement demands of tennis conditioning are different from running, and your footwear should reflect that. Bring water, comfortable training clothes and any information about previous injuries or physical limitations so your coach can factor them into your session from the start.
No prior conditioning experience is required. If you have been away from structured physical training for a while, let us know at your assessment and your plan will be adjusted accordingly. The aim is to build you up progressively, not to push you past a point that sets you back.

How getting started works
- 1
Initial conversation
Tell us about your goals, experience level and schedule. We listen first and then recommend the programme or combination that makes the most sense for you.
- 2
Court assessment
New players complete a short on-court assessment so we can place you in the right group or design the right private plan. No pressure — it is an information-gathering session, not a test.
- 3
Programme enrolment
We confirm your place in the chosen programme, agree on the schedule and complete registration. You receive a welcome email with everything you need before your first session.
- 4
Training begins
Your first session sets the tone: coaches introduce the block's goals, establish group norms and begin skill work. Parents of juniors are welcome to watch from the designated viewing area.
- 5
Progress review
At the end of each block, players receive a written progress report and a brief coach conversation. We discuss what was achieved, what comes next and whether a programme adjustment is needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is conditioning suitable for junior players?
Yes, with age-appropriate programming. Junior conditioning focuses on movement patterns, coordination and body-weight exercises rather than heavy resistance training.
Do I need to be enrolled in a coaching programme to access conditioning?
No. Conditioning is available as a standalone service to any player, regardless of whether they train with us for stroke coaching.
How is the initial fitness assessment conducted?
A 30-minute on-court and off-court assessment covers movement patterns, basic strength indicators and any injury history. Results inform your personalised session plan.
